Eid Celebration at ALEF

We are happy to announce our Eid celebration by hosting a musical gathering for London-based artists Soufian Saihi (Oud), christelle madani (Vocal), and Elizabeth Nott (percussion).

Soufian Saihi has been engaged in many projects since the year 2000 and stages at the front of some interesting music fusion experiences. He formed Karama in 2011 along with Elizabeth Nott and others, and recorded their first EP entitled One year in London where compositions fuse tradition with modernity. Karama performed in many prestigious venues and festivals. Their music was broadcast during Soufian’s appearances on many TV and Radio shows notably by the BBC, MBC and Al Ghad Al Arabi channels.

Christelle Madani was born in Lebanon, in a family of various musical talents. She has been exposed to both western and oriental music including Byzantine and Arabic. With a soprano type of voice, she sings in different styles and in three different languages. She was a member of Saint Nicolas choir in Beirut since the age of 15 and she is currently a soloist at the Arabic Greek Orthodox Church in London.

Elizabeth Nott is an Italian-English Venezuelan born musician and promoter based in London since October 1999. At Morley College she learnt the existence of Ethnomusicology studies, which combines Anthropology and Music together, two of her favourite subjects. She started a BA in Music studies at SOAS, and dedicated herself to play Arabic and Balkan music.

مختارات إلياس للأطفال

هنالك اسئلة عديدة يواجهها الأهل في اختيار القصة الأفضل لاطفالهم: العنوان، المغزى، الرسومات أو حتى  مدى فصاحة اللغة. 

جميع هذه الاسئلة تتلاشى أمام قرار الطفل ورغبته بالقصة. انجداب الطفل لكل قصة يتعلق عادة باللحظة ذاتها أو باحساسه في اليوم ذاته، فالحل الوحيد للتخلص من هذه المعضلة عن طريق فسح المجال للطفل لاختياره قصته، او بالأحرى الايمان بقدرة القصة على اختيار قراءها الصغار.

 

كل يوم سبت، تستقبل مكتبة أ في فرعها بـلندن، بنات وأولاد من أعمار ودُول عربية مختلفه، للاستماع الى قصة باللغة العربية.

للوهله الأولى ظننت أن اللغة الفصحى المكتوبة ستوحد ما فرقته اللهجات العربية المختلفة ولكن كانت النتيجة عكسية، ففُصحية اللغة ومستواها الغريب والجديد فاجأ الأطفال الذين يعيشون تخبطا في هويتهم ولغتهم، كونهم ينتمون لأقلية إثنية في بلد تتعدد فيه الاثنيات والاعراق واللغات.

الحل الاول لتجاوز هذه المعضلة كان استعمال لهجات مختلفة لقراءة القصة، وتنويع اللهجات خلال القراءة الواحدة لجذب جميع الاطفال والتواصل معهم من خلال اللغة او اللهجة الملائمة.

 

القصة المختارة في هذه المراجعة للكاتبين ريم مخول وستيفن فارل، اللذان استعملا اللهجة العامية الشامية لسرد أحداث القصة. وتروي القصة مغامرة البنت شهررزاد، "البنت اللّي ضيعت خيالها".  بعد قراءة القصة لضيوف المكتبة الصغار بطريقة مسرحية، لاحظتُ انجذاب الاطفال الى شخصية "الخيال" التي تم تجسيدها في القصة برسمة كائن مجرد وملون.

تختار هذه القصة المكان والزمان من العالم الواقعي الحقيقي مثل بيت شهرازاد في نيويوريك والشارع بالقرب من البيت وحتى القطار المار تحت الارض، ولكن تُضيف القصة الى هذه العوامل عامل الخيال بتجسيده وترجمة الصور التي "بتصير جوا براس شهرزاد" (حسب ما وصفها أحد الاولاد) على صفحات الكتاب الملونه.

وفّر الدمّج بين الواقع والخيال في القصة تواصلا سريعا معها، حيث تحدثت القصة مع كل طفل من الحضور، واثبتت اللهجة البسيطة معادلتها القوية للتواصل مع القارىء الصغير.

 

في نهاية هذه المراجعة، احب ان انوّه للأهل والمدرّسين والمدرّسات أن لا "تخافو" من هذه الكتب المكتوبة باللغة العربية العامية، فمن الممكن ان تكون البوابة الاولى لأولادكم وطلاّبكم للتقرب من لغتهم الام، المنسية بين ضجة اللغة الانجليزية المستهلكة في كل مكان من حولهم.

أتمنى ان تعجبكم القصة وفحواها الذي لن اطلعكم عليه اكثر من ذلك، و"اتركلكو اياه مفاجاه".

فئران أمي حصة – سعود السنعوسي

علي الرغم من خصوصية البيئة والمكان وعلي الرغم من كم التفاصيل الخليجية في هذه الرواية التي قد يشعر معها القارئ الغير خليجي "في البدء" بالغربة، إلا أن هذا الشعور سرعان ما يتبدل إلي شغف وتوحد مع الأحداث.

تتناول الرواية غزو العراق للكويت، فنقرأ تفاصيل الشارع الكويتي قبل وأثناء وبعد الغزو، وحكايات أمي حصة و كل ما تحمل هذه المرأة وحكاياتها من إسقاطات ورموز.

هنالك أيضاً علاقة الأصدقاء ببعضهم، ومنهم الراوي وعائلاتهم، وتطور هذه العلاقات مع تطور الأحداث، وكذلك  التطرق الى الفتنة الطائفية والصراع السني-الشيعي التاريخي ومحاولة التحذير من مستقبل يبدو مخيف ان لم ننتبه.

فئران أمي حصة رواية تحذيرية في المقام الأول، كتبت بإسلوب أدبي رائع وأبهرنا مؤلفها بإسلوبه المتمكن الشيق وقدرته علي التنقل بمنتهي الرشاقة بالأحداث بين الماضي تارة والمستقبل تارة أخري.

رواية أرض الإله – أحمد مراد

علي عكس روايات أحمد مراد السابقة التي تمتاز بسرعة الإيقاع والتشويق وخصوصاً في بدايتها، جاء إيقاع أرض الإله هذه المرة أبطأ.

 تدور أحداث الرواية حول قصتين في فترتين زمنيتين مختلفتين. الأولى قصة الكاهن "كاي"، والثانية قصة النبي موسي. اذ يقوم كاي بترجمة برديات النبي موسى التي قتل بسببها معلمه أثناء محاولة لسرقتها. وخلال رحلة هروب كاي الحافلة بالمغامرات، يقوم بقراءة البرديات وترجمتها ليكتمل بها السرد.

وبصرف النظر عن مدي صحة الأحداث التاريخية في رواية سيدنا موسي وفرعون، وبصرف النظر عن الجدل حول كل التفاصيل التي كتبها أحمد مراد وامكانية الإبداع في قصة من قصص الأنبياء، الا أن ذلك لا ينفي أني كقارئة إستمتعت بالقصة، وفضلت كثيراً قصة النبي موسى عن قصة كاي، والتي أحسست بها متوقعة والأحداث فيها مكررة دون جديد أو مثير.

وأخيرا، أرض الاله رواية تستحق القراءة فعلاً، صعب الحكم عليها من مجرد قراءة التعليقات والمراجعات. :-)

For my first set of book recommendations, I thought I would start with a couple of my favourite novels that span a range of genres.

Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe

Things Fall Apart has been one of my favourite novels for many years. The book introduces a patriarchal, primitive society during the pre and post-colonisation eras of the Ibo in West Africa. The novel follows Okonkwo and his family, as they attempt to adapt to - or resist - the evolving society around them. The personal struggles Okonkwo faces as the world he knows begins falling apart aregripping, and the reader’s opinion of the characters constantly swings back and forth. Achebe’s rich storytelling, with fascinating hooks and characterisation, hooks the reader to the text; Things Fall Apart is a masterpiece which surprises you with every re-read.

The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss

This first-person view novel tells the story of Kvothe, a gifted young child as he grows to become one of the most notorious wizards in the land. Rothfuss has infused fantasy with beautiful writing - his poetry and prose breathe magic into every scene. As Kvothe recalls his story to a bard, we become introduced to a vivid, magical world, full of both relatable events and surrealistic beings and tales. It is a page-turning novel, and Kvothe will soon become one of your favourite characters. Finally, as an added bonus, the book is the first of a trilogy, and the second book only reinforces Rothfuss’ place as a master fantasy storyteller.

Neither Here Nor There - Bill Bryson

As far as Bryson’s travel books go, Neither Here Nor There is not always considered one of the best. One of his earlier novels, the humour and plot are often argued to be not as integrated and comprehensive as in his later texts. However, as one of my first introductions to Bryson’s writing, Neither Here Nor There will always be my favourite. In it, Bryson chronicles his trip through Europe, while pulling anecdotes from a similar trip he undertook as a student with his friend Stephen Katz. His stories reflect every young person’s dream of a European roadtrip-type journey, and his ingenious humour and writing truly reflect the difference in each country’s cultures, peoples, and histories.

These books can fit for all, and can easily earn a permanent place on everyone’s bookshelves.

ليون الإفريقي - أمين معلوف

تسرد الرواية سيرة ذاتية تخييلية، ببنية تحاكي أدب الرحلة، محكية بلسان بطلها الحسن الوزان، المعروف أيضا بليون الإفريقي. وتدور الأحداث بين سنتي 1488 و1527، حيث تعبر الرواية مراحل حياة ليون الإفريقي، منذ طفولته، المصادفة لآخر سنوات الوجود العربي الإسلامي بالأندلس، ثم هجرته إلى المغرب، ثم رحلاته الموالية التي قام بها، بدافع التجارة، أو لوظيفة السفارة، أو بسبب النفي أو الاختطاف. تقع أحداث الرواية في فضاءات الأندلس والمغرب ومالي ومصر والجزائر وتونس وتركيا وإيطاليا. وتعاصر أحداثها ظروفا ومراحل تاريخية حاسمة كسقوط الأندلس وصعود الدولة العثمانية وفجر عصر النهضة الأوروبية.

قواعد العشق الأربعون - إليف شافاق

تسرد الكاتبة في هذا العمل حكايتين متوازيتين. الخط الزمنى الأول معاصر ويمثل الأحداث التي تمر بها “إيلا”، السيدة الأمريكية التي تعيش حياة رتيبة مع أبنائها وزوجها “ديفيد” طبيب الأسنان الناجح، والأخر يقع فى القرن الثالث عشر، ويحكى قصة اللقاء العجيب بين الفقيه “جلال الدين الرومى” والصوفى “شمس الدين التبريزى”، وما تلا ذلك من أحداث عاصفة انتهت بمقتل التبريزى وتحول الرومي إلى أهم شاعر صوفي في تاريخ الإسلام.
يتقاطع الزمانان، الحالى والماضى، فأحوال “شمس التبريزي” قد غيرت حياة “إيلا” إلى الأبد، فتحولت من مجرد امرأة عادية راكدة إلى عاشقة مجنونة تضحى بكل شىء فى سبيل الحب.

طوق الحمام - رجاء عالم

تدور أحداث الرواية حول قضية قتل امرأة بزقاق أبو الرووس في مكة. اذ يعثر أهل الزقاق على جثة عارية ومشوهة الوجه، ما يشي بأنها حادثة قتل.يبحث الجميع عن المبرر لهذه الجريمة، ومحاولة التعرف إلى صاحبة الجثة التي تصلح أن تترشح لها كل بنات «أبوالرووس». يسعى المحقق والضابط ناصر إلى كشف غموض الجريمة، حيث يقوده ذلك إلى ولوج عوالم بنات الحي الغائبات، ومن خلال رحلة التحقيق تبرز الرواية.

I will use our first blog post to highlight just a few of the gems I have read in the last 6 months. Some of these books have been released already and some of which I can’t wait for you to read later on this year! All the books I choose to read throughout the year, really have to captivate my attention with working full time buying for ALEF and having a toddler to look after. So these are my standout favourites, the books that have gotten me through the fog of toddlerdom and made me forego my much needed naps on the commute to and from work. This is high praise in itself!

The House at Baker Street By Michelle Birkby

Move over Sherlock, finally Mrs Hudson and Mary Watson are given the limelight they deserve! The first in a new series following the two women from Conan Doyle’s stories, as they take on a case Holmes turns down. Enlisting the help of the Baker Street Irregulars and Irene Adler, they become entangled in an increasingly complex investigation. 

A thoroughly enjoyable mystery, I can’t wait to read the next.

The Last Act of Love By Cathy Rentzenbrink

In 1990, Cathy’s brother Matty was knocked down by a car, leaving her and her parents by his hospital bed

urging him to live. This memoir follows the difficult struggles that faced Cathy and her family following this terrible event.

A very brave and heartbreaking memoir, which often had me in tears.

Not Working By Lisa Owens

Claire has quit her job to find herself a new vocation, finding herself in a situation where she doesn’t really know what to do with her life.

An often funny and unexpectedly moving debut novel.

The Versions of Us By Laura Barnett

Eva and Jim meet at the age of 19 in Cambridge while studying at University. The book follows the different paths their relationship could take by staying together or deciding to stay apart. An exploration of fate and a brilliant choice for book club discussions. How the small decisions we make in life can ultimately completely change the direction our lives take us.

We’ll Always Have Paris by Emma Beddington

Emma Beddington, after finding a copy of French Elle as a teenager, begins a life long affair with all things French. Following a family tragedy Emma finally moves to Paris with her French husband and children, and finds it more difficult than she had ever imagined. A witty and moving memoir filled with heart and cake.

Out Later This Year

This Must Be The Place By Maggie O’Farrell

Claudette is a feisty Hollywood actress and now recluse married to Daniel, a New Yorker now living in rural Ireland. This novel is a portrayal of a marriage at a major crossroad. Lovable characters and a thoroughly enjoyable read. I might even go so far as saying it is one of my favourite reads so far this year!

Harmless Like You By Rowan Hisayo Buchanan

A stunning debut novel of loneliness and despair. Yuki, a young Japanese girl in New York in the 60’s struggles to cope with fitting into society, making a series of heartbreaking and tragic decisions, that affect the lives of those surrounding her. An impressive novel, Rowan is definitely an author to watch.

The Return : Fathers, Sons and the Land Between By Hisham Matar

An incredibly powerful memoir following novelist Hisham Matar’s return to Libya after the fall of Gaddafi, to try and discover the truth about what happened to his father, Jaballa. Jaballa was kidnapped and taken to a Libyan prison when Hisham was just 19 years old. This is a moving tale of personal loss within the context of a tumultuous period of Libyan history. A memoir I’d urge everyone to read.

Life Moves Pretty Fast By Hadley Freeman (out in PB in June)

And finally a fun and nostalgic look back at Hadley’s favourite films of the 80’s. You’ll read this and then want to spend the whole week watching Say Anything, Top Gun, Pretty in Pink, Die Hard, the Breakfast Club and more!
